Tragic Accident at Bellagio Fountains Construction Site: What We Know
Las Vegas, NV - A tragic accident at the Bellagio Fountains construction site has left the community in shock. Tizoc Antonio, a 37-year-old ironworker, lost his life in what labor union leaders are calling a "freak accident."
The Incident:
On a fateful Saturday, Antonio was working on the construction site for the upcoming Formula One race. According to sources, an issue with a "quickie saw" led to the accident. Tommy White, the secretary/treasurer of Laborer’s International Union of North America Local 872, explained, "The blade bound up on the quickie saw and it ran up on the (steel) column, and the saw kicked back at him." Such saws, known for their high-speed unguarded blades, have been flagged by the Missouri Department of Labor for their potential danger.
A distressing 911 call released by the Las Vegas police captured the immediate aftermath of the accident. The caller, a woman on the scene, reported, "The saw bounced and hit" Antonio. She described a harrowing scene with "blood everywhere" and urgently requested an ambulance. Antonio's co-workers rushed to his aid, applying pressure to his wounds and performing CPR. However, four minutes into the call, the worker tragically stopped breathing.
The Investigation:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has taken over the investigation. They confirmed that Carma Group is the general contractor on the project, with Standard Steel listed as the employer. Both companies are currently under open inspections related to the accident. Notably, Standard Steel had a previous inspection in December 2021 for a record-keeping violation, but there were no previous inspections involving Carma.
Tizoc Antonio: A Life Remembered
Antonio was no stranger to the world of construction. He had been with Ironworkers Local 433 for many years and had worked on significant projects, including the Sphere and Durango Casino & Resort. On that Saturday, he was set to start work on the F1 construction site, a project he was reportedly excited about, given the significance of the race coming to Las Vegas.
Guests at the Bellagio recounted the immediate aftermath of the accident, with several people rushing to Antonio's side, and some even jumping into the water to assist him. Antonio was later pronounced dead at UMC.
His family, while grieving, remembers him as a man with a big heart. He leaves behind a young stepson. As the investigation continues, the community awaits answers, hoping for clarity on this tragic event.
